06 — FORMATION FLOW
How does truth take root in you?
You’ve spent time understanding the passage.
Now slow down again.
This movement is not about finding more information.
It is about making room for the truth you’ve discovered to move from something you understand into something you begin to live from.
Your Formation Flow moves through:
BEHOLD → ABIDE → ALIGN → EXPRESS
We’ll take them one at a time.
BEHOLD
Pause and set your affection toward God.
Go back to the passage.
Don’t look for a new insight.
Just notice:
What does this passage help me see about God?
Look for things like:
His character
His heart
His actions
His faithfulness
His generosity
His nearness
His authority
Write what the passage has helped you see.
-
Go back to the passage and ask:
What does this passage help me see about God?
Look for what the text actually shows you about:
His character
His heart
His actions
His faithfulness
His generosity
His nearness
His authority
You are not trying to come up with a profound insight.
You are simply allowing the truth you have already studied to help you see God more clearly.
-
From Colossians 1:12–14, we might write:
I see the Father as the One who qualifies, rescues, and brings His people into the Kingdom of His Son.
Remember, BEHOLD is not another interpretation step.
You have already established what the passage says.
Here, you are allowing that truth to help you see God more clearly. STORY+STRAND_Companion_Website_…
ABIDE
Rest in what Christ has already accomplished.
Look back at the truth you established in Interpret.
Now ask:
What can I rest in here?
Not:
What do I need to achieve?
Not:
What am I failing at?
But:
What is already true in Christ?
Write what helps you settle into that reality.
-
Look back at the truth you established in INTERPRET.
Then ask:
What can I rest in here?
Not:
What do I need to achieve?
Not:
What am I failing at?
But:
What is already true in Christ?
You are not trying to create a spiritual goal.
You are making room to settle into what Christ has already accomplished.
Write what helps you rest more deeply in that reality.
-
From Colossians 1:12–14, we might write:
The Father has already qualified me. In Christ, I have redemption and forgiveness. I do not have to make myself acceptable before I can belong.
That is the heart of ABIDE:
not trying to achieve the truth,
but resting in what Christ has already accomplished.
ALIGN
Come into agreement with what God says is true.
You’ve seen something about God.
You’ve rested in what is already true in Christ.
Now ask:
Where is the Spirit inviting me to come into agreement with that truth?
This may involve the way you:
think
believe
see yourself
see God
respond
relate to someone else
But this is not about searching for something wrong with you.
And it is not about creating a list of things to fix.
It is simply noticing where your thinking or response may need to come into agreement with what you now see is true.
You do not have to manufacture an answer.
If nothing specific is surfacing, you can simply remain with the truth.
Sometimes the invitation is simply:
believe this, receive this, stay here.
-
Go back to the truth you wrote in ABIDE.
Then ask:
Is there somewhere I’ve been thinking as though the opposite were true?
Is there an assumption I’ve been carrying that this passage challenges?
Is the Spirit bringing a different way of seeing or responding to my attention?
You do not have to manufacture an answer.
If nothing specific is surfacing, you can simply remain with the truth.
Sometimes the invitation is simply:
believe this, receive this, stay here.
That is the exact kind of optional support this system is meant for.
-
From Colossians 1:12–14, we might write:
I notice how easily I can think as though I still need to prove that I’m qualified. The invitation is to agree with what the Father has already done rather than evaluate myself as though qualification still depends on me.
That is the movement of ALIGN:
not creating a new truth,
but bringing our thinking and response into agreement with what God has already revealed.
EXPRESS
Let what is being formed in you find expression through you.
Ask:
How might this deeper understanding shape the way I live, relate, or respond?
Notice the wording:
How might this shape me?
Not:
What task will I complete?
Not:
What measurable goal will prove I learned this?
Not:
What should I do to make this truth real?
The truth is already true.
Now you are simply making space to notice what life may look like as that truth takes root.
You might notice it shaping:
the way you pray
the way you speak to yourself
the way you respond under pressure
the way you relate to someone
the way you make a decision
the way you rest
the way you approach God
You are not creating a performance plan.
You are noticing what formed truth may look like when it begins to show up in ordinary life.
-
Look back over BEHOLD, ABIDE, and ALIGN.
Then ask:
If this truth becomes more deeply rooted in me, what might begin to look different?
Maybe:
the way you pray
the way you speak to yourself
the way you respond under pressure
the way you relate to someone
the way you make a decision
the way you rest
the way you approach God
You are not trying to create a performance plan.
You are noticing what formed truth may look like when it begins to show up in ordinary life.
-
From Colossians 1:12–14, we might write:
If I am living from the reality that the Father has already qualified me, I may approach God with greater confidence and stop evaluating every moment through whether I have done enough to belong.
That is EXPRESS:
not proving that the truth is real,
but noticing how a truth that is already real may begin to shape ordinary life.
LOOK BACK OVER THE FLOW
BEHOLD — What does this help me see about God?
ABIDE — What can I rest in because of what Christ has already accomplished?
ALIGN — Where is the Spirit inviting me to come into agreement with that truth?
EXPRESS — How might that deeper understanding begin to shape the way I live, relate, or respond?
FORMATION IS NOT A TEST
You are not trying to produce the right spiritual response.
You may have a lot to write.
You may have only a sentence.
You may simply need to sit with what you have seen.
Formation is not forcing an application.
If the truth is still settling, let it settle.
You do not have to rush it into action.
YOU JUST COMPLETED 06 — FORMATION FLOW
You have now moved through one complete mapping cycle:
OBSERVE → WORD STUDY → CONTEXT + CONNECTIONS → NEW COVENANT LENS → INTERPRET → FORMATION FLOW
You began by noticing what was in the text.
You followed the evidence.
You asked what the passage establishes.
And now you have made room for that truth to take root.
If you are studying a larger passage in several sections, you may begin another mapping cycle with the next portion.
If you have completed the passage or section you intended to study, you are ready to step back and ask:
What do all of these pieces help me understand about the passage as a whole?
