01 — OBSERVE

What does the text say?

Stay with what you can see before deciding what it means.

WELCOME TO THE FIRST MOVEMENT.

For now, you are not trying to figure out what the passage means.

You are simply learning to slow down and notice what is actually there.

Before we explain the text, we need to see the text.

For this movement, resist the urge to interpret, apply, or solve anything. We’re just going to look.

Have your Observe pages and Bible ready?

FIRST, CHOOSE YOUR PASSAGE

If you’re working through a larger section of Scripture, don’t try to fit the entire thing into one mapping cycle.

For your first time, choose a small portion of the passage — often one to three verses is plenty.

Write the Scripture reference at the top of your Observe page.

Example: Colossians 1:12–14

That’s it. You have started your Canvas.

WRITE THE PASSAGE

On the first side of your Observe page, you’ll see space for PRIMARY TRANSLATION and COMPARISON TRANSLATION.

Choose the Bible translation you normally read as your Primary Translation. Write the passage in that first space.

Then choose a different translation and write the same passage again under Comparison Translation.

Why write it out?

Because writing forces us to slow down.

Things that are easy to skim when we’re reading often become easier to notice when we’re writing.

Comparing two translations may also help you notice places where translators have used different English words or phrasing.

You don’t have to investigate those differences yet. Just notice them.

NOW READ IT AGAIN

Read your Primary Translation slowly. Then read your Comparison Translation.

This time, begin marking what catches your attention.

  • Highlight key words.

  • Circle repeated words or phrases.

  • Underline anything else that catches your attention.

Don’t worry about whether you’re marking the right things. You’re paying attention.

Maybe a word repeats. Maybe someone performs an action. Maybe one translation uses a word the other doesn’t. Maybe you see a connection you hadn’t noticed before. Maybe something simply makes you curious.

Mark it. You don’t have to understand it yet.

The Canvas asks: Who is speaking, acting, addressed, or identified?

Don’t make this harder than it is. Look at your passage and identify the people you can actually see.

  • Who is speaking?

  • Who is being spoken to?

  • Who is doing something?

  • Who is mentioned?

You are not researching these people yet. You are not explaining why they’re important.

You’re simply answering:

Who is here?

START WITH WHO?

The Canvas asks: What is happening?

Stay with the verbs.

Look for the actions in the passage:

  • What is someone doing?

  • What has God done?

  • What is being given, received, commanded, promised, changed, or described?

  • Are there cause-and-effect relationships?

  • Does one action lead to another?

You are still observing.

You do not need to explain why the action matters yet.

Simply write down what you can see happening in the text.

What is happening?

NOW LOOK FOR WHAT

Now look for relationships inside the passage.

Ask:

  • Are there repeated words or ideas?

  • Are there contrasts?

  • Are there comparisons?

  • Are there commands?

  • Are there promises?

  • Are there reasons or results?

  • Does the passage show a sequence?

You are still not explaining the passage.

You are noticing how the pieces relate to one another.

Write down what you see. What connects to what?

NOTICE THE CONNECTIONS

Read the passage one more time.

Look over what you’ve written.

Ask yourself:

Did I write what the text says—or did I start explaining what I think it means?

If you slipped into interpretation, that’s okay. You don’t need to erase everything. Just notice the difference.

Observation asks: What do I see?

Interpretation will eventually ask: What does this establish?

For now, stay with what you see.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON…

You slowed down.
You stayed with the text.
You noticed what was actually there before trying to explain it.

That is the foundation for everything that comes next.
