05 — INTERPRET
What does the text establish?
You’ve done a lot of looking.
You’ve observed the passage.
You may have studied an important word.
You’ve looked at context and Scripture connections.
And you’ve located the passage within the covenant story and followed it to Christ.
Now we’re going to bring that evidence together.
You are not looking for something new.
Ask:
What can I now understand more clearly because of what I’ve already seen?
Your Interpret page gives you two places to work:
AUTHOR’S MESSAGE
GROUNDED TRUTH
We’ll take them one at a time.
AUTHOR’S MESSAGE
What is the author communicating through this passage?
Start by going back to the passage itself.
Read it again.
Then look over what you recorded in the previous movements.
Now ask:
What is the author actually communicating here?
Try to put it into your own words.
You do not need to explain every detail.
You are looking for the main thought the passage is communicating.
-
If you’re not sure what to write, go back through the evidence you’ve already gathered.
Who is speaking or writing?
Who are they speaking to?
What are they saying about the subject of this passage?
What actions, connections, or contrasts did you notice?
Did the surrounding verses clarify the thought?
Did your word study, Scripture connections, or covenant work change how you understand anything?
Then try finishing the sentence:
The author is communicating that…
You may need a few sentences.
That’s okay.
But resist the urge to make the passage say everything you know about the subject.
Stay with this passage. STORY+STRAND_Companion_Website_…

For Colossians 1:12–14, look at what we have already gathered.
The Father is the One acting:
qualified
rescued
transferred
And in the Son:
we have redemption
we have forgiveness
Our word study helped us see the significance of the Father as the One who qualifies. Context helped us see these statements inside the larger flow of Paul’s prayer and thanksgiving. And the New Covenant Lens helped us recognize them as realities God has accomplished in Christ.
So under AUTHOR’S MESSAGE, we might write:
Paul is calling believers to give thanks to the Father because He has qualified them, rescued them from darkness, and brought them into the Kingdom of His Son, in whom they have redemption and forgiveness.
Notice what happened:
We did not add a new idea. We brought together what the passage had already shown us.
That is interpretation. STORY+STRAND_Companion_Website_…
GROUNDED TRUTH
Based on what you have observed and studied, what can you confidently say is true?
You have already worked through the Author’s Message.
Now ask:
What truth does that message establish?
Keep it connected to the passage.
You are not trying to write a sermon.
You are not trying to make the statement sound profound.
Write from what you have discovered in the text.
If you are unsure, ask:
Can I point to where this came from in the passage?
Did my observations support it?
Did context clarify it?
Did my word study or Scripture connections help confirm it?
Does it fit the covenant context I identified?
If yes, you are probably on solid ground.
If not, return to the passage.
Write from what you have discovered in the text.
-
You may have gathered a lot of information and still need more time to understand how it fits together.
That’s okay.
Use your Notes + Processing page for questions, possible connections, ideas you want to revisit, or things that seem important but are not settled yet.
You do not have to turn every question into a conclusion.
-
From Colossians 1:12–14, we can confidently say:
The Father is the One who qualifies and rescues His people. In Christ, believers have been brought into His Kingdom and have redemption and forgiveness.
Notice what we did not do:
We did not add an unrelated truth.
We did not jump ahead to application.
We stayed with what the passage supports.
That is the goal of GROUNDED TRUTH:
Say what is true because of what this passage actually communicates.
BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Look at the two things you wrote:
AUTHOR’S MESSAGE — What is the author communicating through this passage?
GROUNDED TRUTH — Based on what you have observed and studied, what can you confidently say is true?
Now ask one final question:
Can I support what I wrote from the passage and the evidence I gathered?
If yes, you have interpreted the passage.
Not exhaustively.
But responsibly.
YOU JUST COMPLETED 05 — INTERPRET
You began by asking:
What does the text say?
Then you investigated words, context, connections, covenant, and Christ.
Now you have asked:
What does the text establish?
You have moved from observation to understanding.
The next movement changes the question:
How does truth take root in you?
